The original Valencia orange was discovered in Valencia, Spain, and that is why it is called the name Valencia oranges.
It was naturalized in America in the 19th Century.
The Valencia orange is accepted to be a descendant of another sweet orange that came from subtropic China, hence its capability to adapt to subtropical climates in addition to coastal temperate regions of California and tropical climates of Florida. The Valencia orange tree has been recognized for its hardiness, its ability to be easily planted and its high productivity rate. Without hot days and cool nights, though the fruits do not develop their true orange coloring. Often, the fruits are treated with gas that allows the fruits to produce their signature color.
This is common with other fruits as well. This orange is not like other perishable fruits that gets spoilt easily,

The main purpose of growing the fruits is for processing and orange juice production, Valencia oranges have seeds, numbering from zero to nine per fruit. Its excellent taste and inner color make it desirable for the fresh fruit markets.
Valencia oranges are mainly used for their juice but can also be cooked or eaten fresh. The juice and zest are used for marinades, syrups, vinaigrette, cocktails or to flavor sauces and custards.
The Valencia orange is a bulk orange variety with a smooth and pebbled surface and a semi thick fragrant peel that clings loosely to its segmented and barely seeded flesh. Its flesh, when ripe, is awesomely sweet, juicy and tender. 
Valencia oranges are available in spring through summer. The Valencia orange, also known as summer orange, is a sweet orange variety with at least 50 different known sub varieties and hybrids of the original in existence and/or cultivation.

The treatment process starts in the field and includes a series of steps of clipping the oranges, floating the oranges, soaking, washing, rinsing, drying, and chemically spraying the oranges preparatory to being stored.
The storing process and facility therefor constitute placing of the oranges in an enclosure for a period of from one to eight months while maintaining within close tolerances a proper air circulation, relative humidity, and air temperature. And then the product can be shipped to wherever it wants to go to.
